Lewman Vineyard Information Sheet

Lewman Vineyard, first planted in June of 1992, is located the Eola Hills in the middle of the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The original planting is comprised of Pommard and Dijon 115 Pinot noir clones grafted onto 3309C and a limited amount of 5C-Teleki rootstalk. Using a 1 meter by 2 meter spacing, there is a density of 2,343 vines per acre. The predominant soil type is Nekia with occasional areas of Rittner. Both soils are thin and tend to be devigoring which results in intense and concentrated fruit flavors. The most recent planting, consisting of a mixture of Dijon 667 and 777 clones grafted to RG rootstalk, took place in June of 2003. The Lewman Vineyard has always been managed from a sustainable philosophy such that herbicides and pesticides have never been applied.

Lewman Vineyard 2002 Estate Pinot noir

Harvested on October 17th, the 2002 Pinot noir demonstrated mature black and red fruit flavors with excellent total acids / pH levels. Although the sugar level was elevated, the must was undiluted at fermentation. The must underwent a seven day cold-soak followed by induced fermentation using BRG yeast. The subsequent fermentation was clean and trouble free and the new wine was moved to 30% new center of France oak barrels for aging. Cellaring was again trouble free and the unfiltered and unfined wine was bottled on December 21, 2003. The 2002 Lewman Vineyard Pinot noir wine projects rich fruit aromas consistent with deep, juicy red and black fruit flavors laced with fine tannins. The finish is extended and carries on the flavors experienced in the aromas and palate. This is a well structured, “big” wine that benefits from decanting and has fine aging potential.
